Ziad Adwan’s Masterclasses Illuminate SPAA

Last week, the Sharjah Performing Arts Academy (SPAA) had the privilege of hosting Ziad Adwan for an enriching series of masterclasses centred on the theme of “Power on Stage.” Ziad’s wealth of expertise and experience in theatre illuminated every session, providing students with invaluable insights and skills.

Throughout the masterclasses, students were immersed in a comprehensive exploration of power dynamics in performance, covering a range of crucial aspects:

Power and Narrative: Through intricate storytelling techniques, students delved into the nuances of imagination and point of view, exploring various narrative perspectives from reporting to soliloquy.

Power Mapping Among Characters: In a profound examination of character dynamics, students unearthed the intricate power structures inherent in dramatic narratives, delving into themes of knowledge and self-awareness.

Power and Place: Employing imaginative exercises, students brought performance spaces to life, focusing on the significance of movements and body language in conveying power dynamics effectively.

Transformations of Power: Addressing the dynamic nature of power, students learned to navigate shifts in power structures and adapt physically to these changes, enhancing their performance versatility.

Moreover, students had the opportunity to analyse how power manifests in both comedic and tragic contexts, followed by interactive presentations, discussions, and engaging theatrical exercises.

In addition to the masterclasses, Ziad shared his profound insights in two introductory sessions:

The Establishment and Development of Arabic Theatre in the Levant and the Gulf Region: Offering a comprehensive overview of the historical and cultural dimensions of Arabic theatre, this session provided students with invaluable context for their artistic practice.

Mistakes and Making Mistakes in Theatre: Derived from his PhD thesis, this session delved into the significance of errors in the theatrical process, fostering a deeper understanding of the creative journey.

Ziad Adwan’s multifaceted contributions as a theatre practitioner, educator, and academic have left an indelible mark on our academy. We extend our sincerest gratitude for his unwavering dedication, expertise, and passion for the performing arts, which have enriched the learning experiences of our students at SPAA.
