Scope of the Job

- Responsible for: Teaching/assessment within undergraduate, post graduate programmes and short courses/Saturday school
- Works Closely with Programme Leader – Dance, Lead Dance Tutor, Voice Tutor, Music Tutor and Acting Tutor
Job Purpose
The Dance Tutor is a full-time role at Sharjah Performing Arts Academy and will be responsible for teaching dance technique and style to students from beginner to advanced level. The Dance Tutor will be professionally trained in one dance discipline, with expertise in at least one other genre, and shall also possess choreographic skills for class work and production. Desirable genres include Ballet and Jazz to ensure consistent delivery of our Key Skills within the Programme. The tutor is responsible for facilitating practical classes on all programmes (Diploma, BA, short courses and potentially Saturday schools), being able to apply practical movement knowledge and enabling the learners to develop to the best of their capabilities. The tutor has a key role in safe practice within the delivery of all dance/movement activities at SPAA. This role requires a skill set in which the candidate has extensive practical experience in their field. The tutor reports directly to the Lead Dance Tutor, Programme Leader – Dance, and ultimately the Executive Director of the Academy. This role requires direct teaching, conducting assessment procedures and the supporting administration of, and creative input and production support for performance opportunities. Additional knowledge of dance history and anatomy and nutrition are desirable.
- Ability to teach using various methodologies and techniques from beginner to advanced level
- Develop dance curriculums and prepare lesson plans in line with SPAA policies
- Ability to communicate with a diverse group of teachers and students
- Engage, encourage, and motivate students to reach their goals
- Evaluate student performance and offer constructive and supportive feedback
- Choreograph routines, projects and productions
- Provide safe, creative environments but still providing rigorous dynamic dance training
- Cultivate advanced practice within movement & dance through continued CPD
- Implement health and safety practice within all work settings
- Engage in the diversity of dance practice across a range of sectors
- Teach on all programmes and courses throughout SPAA (Diploma, BA, MA, short courses and Saturday school).
As part of the SPAA team, you will work closely with Programme Leaders and other Lead Tutors to ensure our students are provided with the highest levels of teaching and learning support throughout their course of study. Through these channels of the Academy, the SPAA team will uphold essential practices that ensure courses run effectively and efficiently for the benefit of both students and the wider arts community in Sharjah. You will also collaborate with production teams to foster a dynamic and supportive environment where performance opportunities are safely created, managed, and delivered.
Essential:
- BA degree and significant experience and/or additional qualifications in professional performing arts education and training
- At least 5 years’ experience teaching within a vocational performing arts institution
- Trained in multiple dance disciplines, with specific skills in Ballet and Jazz
- A broad scope of applied dance skills and theoretical knowledge for student graduate study
- Previous experience in assessment/feedback procedure
- Ability to work independently and as a member of a multinational team, showing compassion as well as independence
- Excellent communications skills
- Ability to work on a flexible schedule, which may include evening and weekend work
- Understanding within student assessment and feedback
- Skillful in the dance sector with a specialised genre
- Flexible approach to teaching and conservatoire hours
- Willingness to share pedagogy and collaborate creatively
- Ability to work with students from varying cultural backgrounds and abilities
- Encouragement of high order thinking

Desirable:
- Relevant postgraduate qualification
- DDI DDE within ISTD Dance training
- Experience of teaching and working at HE level
- Professional dance performance and/or choreography experience
- Direct global industry experience
- Clear understanding of schemes of work and preparing class work in line with the course units and marking systems
- Experience working within a multinational school environment
- Ability to adapt to a wide range of age groups
- Experience writing and delivering course modules for higher education
- Clear module deliverance
- Knowledge of dance history
- Knowledge of anatomy and/or nutrition
- Second or third language advantageous.

Sharjah Performing Arts Academy (SPAA) is an independent Academy established by His Highness, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, to address a growing demand in the UAE and MENA region for formal quality education and professional training in the performing arts sector. SPAA is the only performing arts and music conservatoire in the MENA region, offering quality undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes taught in English. The purpose-built Academy comprises one 432 seat theatre, two fully equipped studio performance spaces, TV/recording studios, twelve sprung rehearsal studios, 12 singing tutorial spaces, a resource library, a gymnasium and a cafe.
Sharjah Performing Arts Academy specialises in training graduates for work in the international professional performing arts industry. The faculty working at SPAA are highly experienced practitioners within their respective fields. The focus of the Academy is practical rather than academic.
