On Monday, 30 November at Sharjah Performing Arts Academy (SPAA), Executive Director, Professor Peter Barlow, led a minute of silence as the United Arab Emirates’ flag was lowered to half-mast in respect and recognition of Martyrs’ Day.
Martyrs’ Day, also referred to as Commemoration Day, marks the dedication and sacrifices of Emirati martyrs who have given their life locally and internationally in the field of military, civil or humanitarian service. On this day of commemoration, the UAE nation comes together collectively to remember the heroes who fought for a better world, to thank the families left behind for their sacrifice and courage, and to draw strength from the past to move with hope into the future.
As the only dedicated performing arts academy in the region, envisioned and created by His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, SPAA is a centre of excellence producing graduates who are citizens of the world, prepared for the rigours of international performing and production arts.
“Thanks to the generosity and vision of His Highness, Ruler of Sharjah, our staff and students have this magnificent training facility which has become a home away from home for many,” Professor Barlow explained. “We have all been adopted by the UAE, and as such, it is only right that we pay homage to the customs and days of significance celebrated by our adoptive home.”
